Archived emails in Gmail - a complete How-To

Usually, you don't need to store all your emails in the Inbox. The Archive is a better way to store all your non-important emails without deleting them. Check our instructions to figure out how to use the Gmail Archive.

The email archive is always labeled by the All Mail label, which is assigned to all incoming messages (except those in the Trash or Spam).
In order to view the messages that are in the archive, you need:

  1. Click the More button in the list of labels on the left to open the full list.

How to add an email to the Archive
You can also move any email to the Archive. Once added, all other labels except "All Mail" will be removed from your email. Unlike Trash, it will not be deleted after 30 days. The email will actually remain in your mailbox, will not interfere with other emails, and will always be available from the "All Mail" menu.

  1. Open the email you want to add to the Archive.
  2. Press the Archive button on the action bar.
